My name is Tadiana Richter, and I am a student here at Salt Lake Community. I took this class because it's the last class I need to complete my associates degree. I chose this math class over math 1010 or any other required math class because I struggle with math and was told this was the easier route. My degree here at SLCC doesn't require any further math after this. I hope to learn new strategies and understand class materials. I hope to overcome my challenge with math. Looking forward to learning new things this summer semester.
To satisfy the Quantitative Literacy requirement, I took math 1030.

A few of the main questions people ask when they enroll in a math course is, "How am I going to use this in real life?" "When will I ever need to know what the square root of 144 is or what 'X' equals and why?" Questions like these are arguments I'm sure all of us have heard our peers say multiple times, as well as ourselves. In this class, I feel like these questions have been answered. We have been given a lot of real life scenarios in which we had to solve to find realistic solutions. From figuring out the value of a game if you decide to test your luck and gamble, the probability of having a certain disease or getting false test results to the disease, predicting populations in certain species at a given location through periods of time, to figuring out interest rates and monthly payments on a major loan. For my signature assignment, I chose to highlight the finance project, "Buying a home"(attached.) I felt from all the things we have learned, this one would be the most useful in every day life. In this project we found a house that we were interested in buying at a reasonable price. After deciding on a house we determined what our down payment would have to be. We then researched two different banks or credit unions and calculated what the interest rate would be at each institution. We determined which would be cheaper and used that rate the rest of the way through the project. We compared 30 year loans and 15 year loans, and had to decide which route would save us more money in the long run. We used finance models to determine how much money we were paying out and what percentage was being paid towards interest. This helped me understand the breakdown of how mortgage payments work so I won't feel lost or confused when I decide to purchase my own home. I am confident that I will feel more comfortable about taking a step like that in my life when the timing is right. Buying a house is essential to today's society for anyone who would rather invest than rent month to month. This project doesn't have to relate to only future home owners, it could relate to anyone who is interested in investing in something or taking a loan out, such as for a car or a timeshare. This class had a lot of very useful information that relates to real life, and I only named a few. I really enjoyed learning about how I can apply my math skills in a variety of different situations. I'm excited to see what the future holds for me and how I could use all that I learned later in life.
In this class, we learned about the biology of human beings and the details of what makes us up. It was a very interesting, yet challenging class. A lot of hard terms to memorize and understand. My favorite topics we learned about was genetics, evolution, and the reproductive system. I liked these topics the best because I think it's cool to learn about how we become who we are today and what factors play into that. I took this class because I wanted to learn more about our origins as human beings. Overall, it was a productive experience and I learned a decent amount of information. The crash course science videos were great aspects to the class and helped break down the information into understanding the material a little better. Attached is one of my "taking sides" assignments, which we did throughout the course to compare and contrast different scientists opinions on certain issues. If you enjoy biology and challenging readings, I would recommend taking this class.
I registered for this class because I wanted to learn more in depth about drugs. I've never any drugs except alcohol, but always been curious on exactly what the drug does to the brain and how a drug addict thinks. In this class, we learned a lot about all the different drugs and types drugs including Methamphetamines, methadone, Mushrooms, ecstasy, acid, MDMA, Steroids, tobacco, marijuana, cocaine, heroine, prescription medications, and alcohol. All these drugs are divided in different categories, such as hallucinogens, stimulants, depressants, and narcotics. We learned about the short and long term effects, beneficial factors, and risk factors, how they are made, where they origin from, neurotransmitters involved, and how they effect the brain. I really enjoyed taking this class, the teacher was great, laid back, funny, and interacted with his classmates. He made class fun and a great environment for learning. One of my favorite things I learned this semester was about THICK, and how that is the reason why an alcoholic can't just have one beer. Once THICK is in the brain, it never goes away making alcoholism an uncurable disease. I also really enjoyed learning about ecstasy and other hallucinogens. Attached is my research project which I did on mushrooms. Living in a generation with a lot of drug abuse, there are many places where I could apply my knowledge in the real world. I could inform people, I could take in this information for myself as to continue to never try drugs. I've also been thinking a lot lately about majoring in Crime Scene Investigation and forensic sciences. This information will definitely be useful in that field. I would definitely recommend this class for anyone in college, especially if you love learning new things. You will definitely get something out of this class.
This assignment was very challenging for me, but also a great learning experience. It was a good opportunity to apply my knowledge from what I've learned throughout the semester and tie it in to a real life political issue. It really helped me understand the politics and decision making throughout the issue and made me realize that there is a lot more to the subject than what you see displayed all over social media. Although this subject is touchy to most people, it was awesome getting all sides of the story and why people's opinions differ from others. This paper does a really good job in reflecting what I have learned in class. I've learned that even though State and Religion are separated, it's still really hard to keep them apart. I learned that we live in a democratic institution, which I never knew Previously. Before I took this class, I knew absolutely nothing about politics. This class sparked my interest because I thought it was important that I have a better understanding about how our government is set up and how it runs. I really enjoyed taking this class and participating all the political debates that went on between classmates this semester. It was really neat to get to know each individuals personal beliefs when it comes to politics. What really made this class most enjoyable was the teacher, Professor Gutaj. He has such a passion for this subject which made it a lot more easy to engage in class.
How does writing and rhetoric change the way your audience thinks about you and your ideas? writing changes the way our audience thinks about our ideas because of the way we portray our thoughts and opinions is going to affect whether our audience agrees or disagrees. The tone is going to play a role whether they like us or not, depending if it is positive or negative; or appropriate given the situation
